This review will be be a comparison of the Be a Bombshell Eyeliner Marker in Onyx and the I Heart Punk Essence Jumbo Eyeliner Pen in Black. The packaging, size, and overall appearance seem to be the same. But are they really the same?
The price of Be a Bombshell is $14.00 – Our long lasting water resistant formula last from am to pm.
The price of Essence is $2.99, often found at half price – This jumbo eyeliner pen with a felt-tip is ideal for girls who want to stand out – in a good way! Particularly easy to use, it’s perfect for eyeliner newbies with slightly shaky hands. And thanks to its practical size, you can rock the look when you’re on-the-go, too! Essence claims to be water resistant, smudge proof, and will last all day.
Is the Essence Eyeliner a dupe for Be a Bombshell?: Absolutely yes!
Which one is better?: Be a Bombshell… but it’s barely better.
Age range recommendation: Newbies would probably love this eyeliner. If you’re experienced with eyeliner, I’d recommend gel liner, a small felt tip liner, or a brush liquid liner since they’re bolder than both of these eyeliners.
Pigmentation: Both are fairly black though neither of them are jet black. In this category, they are the same.
Ease of use: They’re both exactly the same size with the exact same feel. They apply the exact same way, which means they’re both equally easy to use.
Application: I think this eyeliner is best used for thicker lines and cat eyes, or just dotting between the lashes to create a fuller effect. The felt tip is kind of hard and pointy but you can make thin lines using just the tip. However, I will admit that it’s difficult to keep the point perfectly straight to get a super thin line. Most people hold their eyeliner at a slant, and when this eyeliner is slanted, you’re very likely to accidentally make a thick line. You can tell by the picture above that thicker lines are more likely to be created regardless of how you move the pen.
The applicator: Both are very sturdy and have the same type of tip applicator. In this category, they are also the same.
Does the eyeliner bleed?: Nope. I’m happy to say that both eyeliners stay where you put it when first applying.
Ease of taking off: Both are easy to take off with makeup remover or lotion. Be a Bombshell requires a little bit more effort to take off but it’s still very easy to remove.
Lasting power: This is where the two differ. Be a Bombshell has a water resistant formula and so does Essence. However, Essence does not stand up against water AT ALL. As soon as rain or a tear touches the eyeliner, it’ll run. Be a Bombshell can handle a little bit of water but it’ll start to run just like Essence does. On the top lash line, I think they perform about the same for a normal day. On the lower lash line, Essence noticeably smudges on me at some point during the day while Be a Bombshell smudges but significantly less. Keep in mind that I have SUPER oily skin during the summer and it’s currently summertime (July). If this were autumn, winter, or spring (mid 60’s or lower in temperature F), I’d say they perform equally well.
Overall: Both are great and they perform almost equally well. Be a Bombshell is slightly better but not by much. If you wanted to try Be a Bombshell but don’t want to order online or spend the money, definitely try Ulta or your local drugstore and pick Essence up instead.
